DOHA (Qat): Hungary’s Krisztian Berki, a popular face at the FIG World Cups in Doha, announced his retirement last month. 

But the 2012 Olympic Pommel Horse champion is not done with the sport after he was named as a Sport Director within the Hungarian Gymnastics Federation.

The Hungarian Olympian lived up to his reputation at his maiden Doha event in 2012 and claimed a gold at the 5th and 6th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup.

Berki, 36, was also the 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012 European Champion in his pet event. 

He was twice adjudged ‘Sportsman of the Year’ by his native country. 

The gymnast struggled with injury and missed qualification for the Rio Olympics in 2016, but made a successful return at the World Cup’s first leg in Melbourne (AUS) in that year. 

Berki has been involved in the sport for more than 30 years.

“My career has been very complete,” said Berki in his retirement speech. “It is no exaggeration to say I wish such a career to every athlete.”
