DOHA 2016 Gymnastics World Challenge Cup attracts the best Ranking Gymnasts in the World
Doha (QAT) Competition Management Office; March 05, 2016: The 9th edition of the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup, which will start on March 24 at the Aspire Zone, is expected to push the performance level quite high as it has attracted the a big number of World ranking gymnasts.
The total number of participating gymnasts is 111, including 67 males and 44 females.
The list of athletes from 33 countries is topped by the Rumanian’s two-time Olympian Catalina Ponor, join her 2012 Olympic teammates Larisa Iordache and Diana Bulimar as they continue their preparation for the Rio Test Event, where they’ll hope to lead their country in qualifying to this year’s Games. Ponor will compete only on beam, slowly easing her way back into her three events after an injury took her out last fall, while Iordache will do all but vault and Bulimar. In addition, we’ll also see some of Switzerland’s top contenders in Giulia Steingruber, Ilaria Käslin, and Stefanie Siegenthaler, while Germany is sending two young gymnasts with potential to fill some of the available spots. Also 2014 world beam silver medalist Bai Yawen, who missed out on the worlds team last year due to a lack of consistency throughout the majority of her season
Also the Brazilian’s Diego Hypolito (two bronze medal on Floor Exercise in WC JPN 2011 and CHN 2014),
The Croatian MOZNIC MARIJO (bronze medal in Horizontal bar of the WC CHN 2014).
New country will participate in Doha for the first time, which is Cuba with the 19 year old Manrique Larduet who won silver medal of the All-Around event and a bronze medal of the horizontal bar at the last 2015 Glasgow World Championships.
Most of the gymnasts want to test their preparations and continue their preparation for the Rio Test Event, where they’ll hope to lead their country in qualifying to this year’s Games.
