DOHA: Former world champion Carlos Yulo of the Philippines will be among the stars who will be looking to win their pet events and points at the 16th Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Championships.
The four-day event starts with the two-day qualifications on April 17 at the Women’s Sports Committee Hall at Aspire Zone.
Yulo will compete in two more international competitions, one here in Qatar and one in May in Uzbekistan before heading to Paris.
This year’s event assumes importance for most top gymnasts as it will be last qualifying competition for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Some of the world’s best gymnasts have registered for this year’s championships.
In March, the Filipino Olympian competed in the FIG Apparatus World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan where he claimed a bronze medal.
“I want to test myself in these competitions. I want to make some mistakes so I would know what and where to adjust ahead of the Olympics,” said Yulo, who will be competing at the Olympics for the second time after his debut at the Tokyo 2020.
Yulo, whose goal in Paris is to excel in the individual all-around event, said he remains grateful to his former Japanese coach Munehiro Kugimiya, and is also thankful to his current coach and compatriot Aldrin Castaneda.
This is Yulo’s second Olympic stint after making his debut in Tokyo in 2021.
